At Brown & Carroll, we are committed to ensuring that the health, safety and welfare of all our employees, contractors and visitors is not compromised by any of our work activities.
We achieve this by making sure that our directors listen to all Brown & Carroll managers, employees and contractors when it comes to health and safety decision making. After all, these are the people who are integral to our success.
The work of our in-house Health and Safety team also allows us to be proactive when it comes to the specific health and safety challenges of each of the projects we work on.
Training and Procedures
As a company, we implement a range of training opportunities and follow strict procedures. This ensures that we keep up with the latest health and safety requirements in our factory and on all our projects, as well as maintaining industry-wide standards and innovations.
- Our extensive NVQ training programme for our apprentices and improvers provides the skills and competencies they need to work in the construction industry.
- We continually train managers on the Project to SMSTS and SSSTS levels..
- All employees hold the required CSCS card.
- Through 'tool box talks', employees on every project receive training in fundamental health and safety requirements, including:
- manual handling
- fire safety
- safe use of work equipment
- face fit testing
- noise exposure precautions
- dust and vibration.
As part of our Integrated Management System (accredited to OHSAS 18001:2007, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015), we ensure that all procedures implemented across the company include health and safety requirements.
Due to the unique challenges of each project we undertake, we need to be proactive in our approach within ever-changing site conditions. We do this by writing and following bespoke Method Statements and Risk Assessments for each task on each project. As a result, our exceptional health and safety performance has marked us out as industry leaders.
It goes beyond implementation, however. To ensure all of our training is actually followed, our in-house Health and Safety team undertake weekly random inspections of our projects and produce detailed reports. This rigorous approach has helped us to become a multiple-award-winning and truly trusted contractor across the whole of our Principal Contractor base.
Health and Wellbeing
In the construction industry as a whole, the health and wellbeing of employees does not feature highly on the agenda. However, we implement our own employee health monitoring procedure, having partnered with a mobile health screening provider who provides lung function, auditory and dermatology tests, as well as providing general health advice.
We also provide all of the necessary mandatory PPE and ensure it is worn, along with any task-specific specialist PPE – all completely free of charge.
In addition, we offer a full, subsidised canteen facility for our factory and office staff, with healthy options readily available each day. We also actively encourage our employees to look after themselves by offering a 'ride to work' scheme in partnership with Evans Cycles, as well as offering a private health care plan.
