Having started life almost a hundred years ago as a tiny café in a narrow West End townhouse, The Ivy has long been one of London’s most loved and iconic restaurants. When it underwent a complete refurbishment in 2015, it was essential that every ounce of its magic be retained – and we were privileged to provide a specialist joinery package befitting of its glittering reputation.
The unusual triangular shape of the building with a narrow point at the entrance gave us some interesting challenges. It also gave us the perfect opportunity to create a stylish entrance canopy with backlit lettering for the unmistakeable Ivy logo, and smart new brass-clad entrance door sets with integral glazing and detailed fretwork beading. Set alongside specially commissioned artwork by Damien Hirst, the overall effect is one of class, style and distinction.
With an intensive ten-week turnaround, we had fifteen skilled joiners and French polishers on site at the project’s peak. Highlights include banquettes in traditional Ivy green leather, an oak glazed screen in the new entrance, antique silver mirrors, and the “sumptuous” loos with oak veneered panelling and silk wall panels. So did we retain the magic? According to The Sunday Times, “…this relaunch will encourage regulars to “cling like Ivy” and capture a new generation of admirers.”
