Fitting out London's finest buildings

Career Stories

Subs, Project Manager

“I soon realised one of the best things about working at Brown & Carroll is the range of jobs, clients and architects you get to work with. The work is as high profile as you can get, and you really are working with the crème de la crème. It is, without doubt, the best fit out company in London.”

Subs joined Brown & Carroll in 1998 as a Carpenter, working under Project Manager Paul Biscoe. Over the next five years, he worked on a range of prestigious projects, and was later promoted to Site Supervisor in 2002.

Subs continued to build his skills and experience, learning everything he could about the industry.

“The support has always been fantastic, and the teaching has always been ‘hands on’. You learn from the others around you, and I was even taught by Paul Carroll in the way that he was taught. You don’t miss opportunities like that.”

In 2005, Subs was promoted to the position of Project Manager, and has since managed a range of high-profile contracts.

“A typical day for me usually starts with meeting the team and giving the daily briefing. I then usually have meetings with the contractors, and afterwards go and see how the lads are getting on. Any help they need, I’m there to give it, and then it’s time for some paperwork before starting again the next day!

“The thing about Brown & Carroll is that we’re not just a team of workers, we’re also close friends – and that’s rare to find in this industry. We all gel, there’s no falling out, and the bosses are genuinely interested in you. It’s just a great bunch of people, working towards the same goal, on the same path, wanting to be proud of their work.

“The work’s challenging but it’s interesting, and it always gives you a real sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s hard to pick out my favourite job, but the Google handover particularly stands out for me. It was a challenging job, but we did it, and most importantly the client was happy. Then there was the HSBC Tower, where we worked while overlooking the runway of City Airport – that was interesting! And the Cheese Grater, where we had the whole of London as our backdrop.”

Subs has some words of advice for anyone thinking of joining Brown & Carroll:

“Definitely apply. If you’re willing to learn, to share your knowledge and work hard, it’ll pay off. Just take the opportunity with both hands.”
