We were pleased to receive this photo of the newly installed Elephant Pump that we recently sponsored with AquAid Africa in Manicaland – a province in the north eastern highlands of Zimbabwe. It was built by an experienced Africa Trust team leader, with the assistance of the local community and will easily provide safe drinking water for upwards of 300 people for decades.
The pump is constructed from locally available materials ensuring the community can easily repair it should they need to, which in turn extends the life of the pump exponentially.
Having access to clean water close by has numerous benefits for the whole community, helping to eliminate many diseases such as dysentery, and ensuring people will be able to sustain their crops and therefore eat better. Banana plantations are often established and grown using water from the pump. The produce is then sold, more banana plants planted, and the monies from the sales are used to contribute towards the children’s’ school fees.
Not having to walk for miles to retrieve water in buckets or containers means local children will not only have more time to attend school, but being properly hydrated allows them to concentrate in lessons, which means a better education and future for them.
