Transport for London plays an integral role in keeping the capital on the move, and its own recent move to Stratford’s International Quarter gave us the privileged chance to help create brand new headquarters to serve this London institution into the future.

Celebration of sustainability and TfL history

With TfL’s associations of the iconic Underground and legendary London buses, and International Quarter London promising to be the most sustainable office development in London, these new headquarters blend TfL’s rich history with a fresh look forward. Cutting-edge design and expertise have culminated in an extensive package across ten floors – where modern oak-and-marble credenzas and American white oak wall panelling juxtapose with some rather familiar upholstery, reminiscent of the District Line itself.

A gravity-defying, Routemaster-inspired reception desk

An unforgettable welcome waits at the huge reception desk – a force of engineering in itself. With just a small footprint to support the hulking 6 sq m frame, we anchored the base with underfloor spigots bolted into the concrete below. The skeleton of steel was pieced together like a 3D jigsaw, then finished in Lamborghini Green high-gloss lacquer. Inside, we’ve incorporated electronic equipment for four users, while the stunning veneered top features concentric circles of inlaid metal – inspired by a Routemaster running board!

“The appointment of Brown & Carroll for the delivery of joinery solutions on both the fit out and shell and core elements was key to the successful completion of TFL’s new home. Their solution driven attitude in both design and site activities was key to the success of this project and again reinforced their position as the leaders in specialist joinery fit out”
